Paints and coatings are made of liquids and solids, mixed together. Once the coating is applied, the liquid part will evaporate totally and the final dry film is formed by the remaining solid part only. For a given thickness, the area covered by an applied coating is given by the volume of its solid content, not by its weight. This means that the final yield is determined by the volume of the applied coating, but not by the weight. |
If the manufacturer put heavier solids into the coating, he sells more kg. for the same final volume = for the same final yield. In this way, if the manufacturer sells its coating by kg., he may earn more for the same yield only because of the weight of the solid content. This is why we sell coatings by liters, because the yield is not depending of the weight of the solid content, but of the volume. |
